Todays job has been to finish and install this screen door between the cattery and kitchen area. We will alternate it between the original solid door for winter to keep the warmth in, and this for summer to let the breeze through.

We have been busy this week getting ready for the summer season. The perspex has come off the windows so we can open the louvres and get some airflow through now that the weather is warmer. A pallet of Cat litter has been ordered and arrived, in preparation for the Xmas New Year period. Weeds that have shot up due to the warm weather have been sprayed, and mowing the lawns is again a weekly job.
Things to do include water blasting the outdoor runs to give them a good clean, and ordering enough cat food to get us through the Xmas New Year period. Dont forget, we now sell Blackhawk cat biscuits (that we feed in the cattery). We are very competitive on prices, so if you want a bag, let us know. You can order a bag when you drop your fur baby off, and pick it up with your kitty at the end of the stay. Easy peasy! We are pleased to announce our range of Blackhawk cat food is now in stock.
Three great flavours, Chicken & rice which we feed in the cattery, Lamb & rice, and Fish. Prices are below what you would pay at Vets and Pet stores, giving value to our customers. Other food in the Blackhawk range including Grain free, Sachets, and Dog food are able to be ordered in by request. With the cost of living going up so much at such a fast rate, we want to help our customers out. We feed Blackhawk Chicken Biscuits in the cattery, and find it a palatable, high quality food. We buy in directly from the NZ suppliers, and get good rates which we want to pass on to customers.
From September 1 2023 we will keep a limited amount of Blackhawk food for sale in stock. Prices will be under RRP (Recommended Retail Price) as we don't have the overheads of other retailers. Blackhawk is a good quality food, usually only available through Vets and Pet Stores, and cats generally really like it. It also has a 30 day 100% money back guarantee, so if your cat doesn't like it, you get a full refund. We will be selling both Adult Cat, and Kitten formulations, sizes ranging from 1.5kg, 3kg, and 8kg bags. Flavours include Chicken, Lamb, and Fish. Other Blackhawk foods such as wet food Sachets, Grain Free, and Dog food can be ordered in by special request. Please enquire for pricing. With the coming of the cold season upon us, we have installed our plexiglass windows over the louvres to help with keeping draughts out, and warmer air in. This year we have plexiglass for the back half of the cattery too, since it worked so well last year.
We also have igloos and warm beds for all cats, and hot water bottles for the older cats that may need extra snuggly beds. We do have a couple of heaters over in the cattery, but found they were seldom needed last year with the plexiglass and new insulated ceiling in the front half of the cattery. Well we have made it through another busy Xmas/New Year period. A lot hotter this year compared to our wet Xmas last year, but the insulation in the new ceiling in the front part of the cattery certainly helped. In fact Bronnie (the previous owner whom many of you know) commented that it was much cooler inside than on previous years, and we didn't need the big noisy fans. I am sure this helped with keeping cats happy and relaxed. Just gotta start saving those pennies to get the back half done now!
The deposit and date confirmation system that we instigated after our first Xmas/New Year period here worked well, with way fewer last minute cancellations or changing of dates. This meant we were able to fit more bookings in with less disappointed customers. We will continue this in the future. Any bookings between Dec 15 - Jan 31 require a 50% non-refundable deposit and date confirmation by October 31. We are already over 50% booked for Xmas/New Year 23/24, so if you haven't already booked, better get in fast. If you happen to miss out, we do have a waiting list, which will open up after deposits are due on October 31, however we only had 4 spaces open up after the deposit due date, so you'd need to be lucky. Due to increasing costs over the last year, (cat food has gone up 3 times!) we will unfortunately have to increase our prices. This will commence on 1st February 2023 as we don't want to negatively impact our guests already booked in over the summer holiday period. For new pricing, please see our Rates/Hours page.
Pretty pleased with myself today. I got the plexiglass attached to the cattery windows for the winter season.
These are on the outside of the louvre windows in the front half of the cattery, where the new ceiling and insulation is. it makes the windows there effectively double glazed (not quite as good as commercial ones!) and should make it much less draughty, and more efficient to heat in winter. The plexiglass is removable for summer, letting us take advantage of the louvres for airflow in the hotter months. Some before, during, and after photos of the renovations we have done to the front runs inside.
A ceiling with insulation installed, and clear light panels to keep the light coming in. We have plexiglass panels to go on the outside of the windows in winter to keep the drafts out. Louvre windows are great in summer, but let the cold air in, in winter. I took the opportunity to give this end a spruce up paint wise as well, while it has been empty of cats. We will let the paint dry and the smell reduce for a couple of days, then the cats can move back in! Thanks to the guys at JKF Builders for their work, and help figuring out what was going to work best for us with what we already had. We have a new ceiling with insulation going up in half the cattery today. This should make it a bit warmer in winter, and cooler in summer.
had to move the cats into the back half and close the door (for noise control) last night. They have all settled well into their new runs, and dont seem to mind the bit of noise occasionally. |
